Exercises

  1. Look up “ultralight backpacking” on the internet. Memorize everything you find.
  2. Stop swearing at exercise 1. This is a gift. Try being born before the internet, when if you were lucky you had a library in town. One with real books, and they let you in if you promised to be quiet. Then you would have more humility. Yes, you would. And a whole lot more gratitude. Shape up.
  3. Haven’t learned your lesson yet? OK, then go back in time for real, to 1955, about when Emma Gatewood took up backpacking. Get some gear. Like a big canvas bag with straps on it. That’s your pack. How do you like it? Get a pair of leather boots, weighing at least three pounds. Each. A Nice, waxed canvas tent. Waxed to keep some of the rain out. For the first 15 minutes. Of the first time that it rains. Don’t put it up yet, just try to lift it. We’ll wait. Think about which size iron skillet you’d like to carry. Really think about it.
  4. Buy a roll of dental floss and take it home. Pull off four or five feet and drag it around on the carpet in front of your cat. Watch what happens. This is your reward for being good. It won’t work with a dog.
